Ex Nihilo

At 31 years old, Hart won an international competition and earned the right to produce a series of "Creation" sculptures for the Washington National Cathedral. Hart was commissioned to create the massive sculpture series for the Cathedral's main facade. The Cathedral was the place where Hart first learned the fundamentals of Italian stone carving. "Ex Nihilo" (Out of Nothing) was the product of two and a half years of imagination and 13 years of laborious sculpting efforts. Unveiled in 1982, this unfolding, intertwining swirl of human and divine forces is arguably the most important work of religious sculpture in the 20 th century.

Born of Light
