At 31 years old, Hart won
an international competition and earned the right to produce
a series of "Creation" sculptures for the Washington
National Cathedral. Hart was commissioned to create the massive
sculpture series for the Cathedral's main facade. The Cathedral
was the place where Hart first learned the fundamentals of
Italian stone carving. "Ex Nihilo" (Out of Nothing)
was the product of two and a half years of imagination and
13 years of laborious sculpting efforts. Unveiled in 1982,
this unfolding, intertwining swirl of human and divine forces
is arguably the most important work of religious sculpture
in the 20 th century.
This amazing piece is a testament to Hart's
“sculpting in Light” approach. It features graceful
figures that flow out of a Lucite base.
This limited edition Lucite sculpture typifies
Hart's efforts to reintroduce the concept of timeless beauty
back into the modern art scene. Invigorating and absorbing,
“ Exaltation ” highlights the genius of this mesmerizing
figurative sculptor. |
