Over the years, I have painted Capri many times - from the
rocky cliffs that plunge into the sea, to the small boats lying in sandy coves
like brilliantly-colored jewels. Capri is the most glamorous seaside getaway in
all of Italy. It is both serene and dramatic.
On my last visit to Capri, my wife Judi and I accidentally discovered this
garden terrace on top of a lovely little hotel that we nicknamed "Hotel
Capri". The hotel had a winding staircase to the roof, and when we emerged,
we saw this beautiful scene. The rooftop garden overlooked terraced gardens
below and the sea beyond. I remember that we were looking for a special path to
the sea when we happened upon this little jewel. The rooftop garden was not only
intimate - it reminded us of a bouquet of fresh flowers - they were in
containers in every corner. We fell in love with this spot, and we hesitated
here to rest before continuing our walk down to the sea.
