Art is not principally a
matter of imitating nature; it is, first and foremost, an imaginative act. I
don't paint the world precisely as I see it; you might say I paint it as I dream
it can be. If, in that process, beauty is enhanced, intensified, I make no
apologies for that. Bellagio is one of the garden spots on the shores of Lake
Como in Varenna, Italy. I wandered its narrow lanes, gathering subtle visual
images of the many lavish villa gardens that grace this exquisite town.
In "Bellagio Garden" I express the sublime tranquility that I found
time and again in these architectural delights built of lavish flowers, climbing
vines, and graceful columns of weathered marble. In "Bellagio Garden,"
a low, intense morning sun warms the old stone and literally sparkles through
the dew-drenched vines. Sun warms me to my bones and fires my imagination; it is
the gift of God I most love to celebrate in my art. My palette knife technique
is so charged with energy, that evoking stillness, peacefulness, and that
contemplative pause between breaths can be a great challenge. When I look at
"Bellagio Garden" I savor that mood again; I hope the painting works
that special magic for you.
