In "Beyond the Garden Wall" I celebrate a natural setting that
replicates the precision and control of framed art. The archway, just outside
the wildly romantic Villa Cipriani in the hillside village of Asolo, neatly
frames a cluster of white-washed homes, sculpted trees, a burst of floral color,
a hint of hillside, a crescent slice of sky. On the near side of the archway, an
extravagant array of flowers pours out a gift of color. The contrast between the
refinement of art and the exuberance of nature is neatly expressed in this
single canvas.
This glorious place has been important to my lovely wife Judi and I; we began
our first trip to Italy at the Villa Cipriani, the lavish and wonderfully
romantic vacation spot just 40 miles north of Venice. My sketchpads were filled
with the visual delights of the villa -- its multi-tiered gardens, its dazzling
floral arbors, its balconies and arches -- and the figure of my lovely Judi as
she moved like a muse through all this beauty. When I look at "Beyond the
Garden Wall" now, I remember the passionate serenity of a time and place
when art and life came together for me.
