Have you ever noticed that favorite places become even more special when you're showing them off to someone you love?

The morning I did my studies for "California Shores," I was taking Judi on a grand tour of one of my favorite coastal retreats -- the wonderfully picturesque artist colony of Laguna Beach.

Judi, who'd never been there before, was properly enthusiastic as we walked under the protruding cliffs, enjoying the play of light on cresting waves and the surge of surf on the jagged coastal rocks. (Not to mention the restaurant visits that framed our hike -- Laguna has everything.)

I tried to capture some of Judi's excitement when I returned to my studio and palette knife to create "California Shores." Sometimes my canvases range over the full spectrum of color; this more reserved painting is an exploration of the expressive power of blues (after-all, Picasso had his blue period.) I think I've captured a full range of emotion -- Judi's surprise and exhilaration and unrestrained joy -- in the interplay of shades of blue.

When we can view a scene with the wide and innocent eyes of the newcomer, we see as God intended us to -- without jaded expectations. The world looks, then, a good deal like it does in "California Shores."
