In a way, the relationship between an artist and his audience is like a good
marriage. My wife Judi and I share places and experiences that are important to
us. I often share those same favorite scenes with my audience through my
paintings.
That's just what happened with Hillside Villas. This gorgeous view was
Judi's gift to me, as it's my gift to you. I'd made one quick trip to
Acapulco before we explored Manzanillo together. Judi had lived in Mexico for
three years and, as a pilot, had flown repeatedly over the Mexican Riviera. She
was anxious to show me the country she'd come to love.
We stayed at the famous resort of Las Hadas (The Fairies), where Dudley Moore
once judged Bo Derek a "10" and at where jet setters continue to flock. Hillside
Villas was painted from the hill above the resort; I tried to capture the
glamour of the locale as well as its natural beauty. I was greatly taken by the
energy and passion of Mexico-the colors, the music, the flavors, and the
sunlight-I wanted to express it all in Hillside Villas. As I laid on
the pigment with my palette knife, I recalled the romantic legends surrounding
Manzanillo-which far predate my visit with Judi. Cortez, Spanish galleons,
buried treasure-they're all part of the atmosphere here, and now, of my
painting as well.
