Lake Como is a mirror in which God views His creation with a special brilliance and clarity.

I've looked into that fabulous mirror myself -- many times -- and each time I've been moved to pick up my palette knife and lay thick swathes of pigment on canvas, in effect sculpting with color. The visual effects here -- the explosion of warm earth-tones against the cool lake blues, the shimmering reflections of stone and cliff on water -- challenge me to dig deep and discover the full dramatic power of my art.

"Lake Como Landing" is an evocation of mood, a celebration of life. Fishing boats are moored at the landing; the pattern they make strikes me as whimsical, light-hearted. The village of Varenna, with its ancient stone buildings, seems to float on the waters.

Structurally, the curved diagonal thrust of the landing stairs neatly divides sea from village and mountains; it's like the spine of the painting.

This is a dream-vision charged with energy; it is uplifting. I feel the same exhilaration when I look at "Lake Como Landing" today, and remember that luminous late-afternoon sun, as I did the day I was first bewitched by this vision.
