I know Palm Beach very well; I've visited often in the last fifteen years.
I enjoy strolling down Worth Avenue with its wealth of famous art galleries.
Yet, I just discovered this hidden treasure tucked away in downtown Palm Beach,
on a very recent visit.
When I first noticed the little Palm Beach flower garden, the light wasn't
quite right. I made arrangements with the owner, then waited for the sun to move
into place.
It seemed as though the mist mixed with the fragrance of the flowers causing the
atmosphere to become drenched with a heady perfume. Water droplets clinging to
the flower petals sparkled in the mid-day sun. I found myself sketching in a
perfect little garden of sensual delights.
When I got back to my studio and began to lay on swathes of pigment with my
palette knife, I wanted to convey the wonderful sense of freedom I'd felt that
afternoon. In "Palm Beach Flower Garden" the colors seem to dance on the
canvas. Pure color in the right combinations can have an electrifying effect. I
believe that is what happens here.
