I feel a sense of anticipation as I revisit "Sunlit Stroll" in my mind. Part of the reason, I know, is that I walked this ancient cobbled path on the shore of Lake Como alone, waiting for my fiance, Judi, to join me in Italy. Painting is an emotionally charged activity for me; the feelings that gripped me as an observer take hold of me again in the studio, influencing some of the color choices I make, the way I hold my palette knife, and apply paint to canvas.

Perhaps, if Judi had been walking with me as I approached the village of Varenna on that long-ago afternoon, the stone pathway would not have seemed so shrouded in shadow, the distant village so bathed in light. Somehow, the sun-dazzled city came to stand in my mind for my absent love, whose arrival I awaited with such eager anticipation. The path wound in and out along the shoreline; a brilliant sun sparkling through the trees painted the weathered stones in radiant light and deep shadow, drenching the city on the hill with color.

Perhaps, in the last analysis, the thing each of us longs for is nothing more or less than the promise of God's grace -- the City on the Hill that has inspired mankind with its promise of peace for many centuries.
