I like to imagine that each of us has a "hearts home" -- a place where, when we see it for the first time, we feel comfortable, perfectly at ease. And each time we go back it's like coming home again.

I'm fortunate to have found just such a place. For me it's the lakeside retreat of Varenna, Italy, nestled on the shores of Lake Como. I keep coming back to this picturesque hide-away, where the mirror bright lake reflects ancient stone villas built for the pleasure of 17th and 18th century Italian nobles. and for citizens of the world down to the present day.

The Villa Monastero -- once a sanctuary for monks, now an international science center -- was a delightful surprise when I stumbled on Varenna and its multiple treasures on my first visit to Italy.

Now I return eagerly, sketchbooks and pencils in hand, only to find that dear, familiar vistas offer me a new face when I see them in a fresh season or a novel light. "Varenna Villa" is the vision of a pristine morning, when the light sparkled and danced on the water and awakened the villa's creams and lavenders with its special clarity.

I suppose that a "heart's home" like Varenna, which never ceases to delight me with its visual variety, is truly a gift from God.
