Travel excites me, awakens my senses -- especially when it leads me to sensual delights like this floral revelation I discovered in the Alpine town of Gardone Riviera.

The ancient Italian town, nestled on the shores of Lake Garda, was home to the great poet Gabriele d'Annunzio. Having sampled its pleasures, I understand the source of his poetic inspiration. This cluster of ancient cottages was vibrant with flowers; virtually every windowsill and balcony lavish with colorful blooms. The glorious floral colors I celebrate in "Village Hideaway" stirred my emotions when I came upon this piazza.

I knew at once that I would paint the scene; even as I sketched, I longed to return to my studio to wrestle with the pigment and canvas that would supply the means to memorialize my vision.

Poetry has been described as "emotion recollected in tranquility;" for me, the phrase suits the process of painting as well. I strongly believe that vision has an emotional aspect; when I return to my studio I strive to recapture the feelings that possessed me when I discovered my painting.

In a sense, I attack the canvas with my palette knife, laying on paint with passionate intensity as I transfer my feelings and perceptions to the painting. How well that process has worked in "Village Hideaway."
