Biography

The name Fabergé is synonymous with the famous Fabergé eggs that were originally designed by Carl Fabergé, Theo's grandfather, and were commissioned by the Russian Tsars. The 1917 Russian Revolution brought to an end the creation of beautiful objects d'art being designed by Carl. Carl's youngest son Nicholas was sent to London in 1906 to run their only overseas branch and remained in England after the Revolution.

Nicholas' only son Theo was born in England in 1922 and began making objects d'art in the 1950's. Since that time, he has been using his Holtzapffel Lathe, dating back to 1861, to create his objects. In 1984 Theo Fabergé was persuaded to produce a collection to be available on the international market. Not private commissions, but limited edition designs by Theo Fabergé for the St Petersburg Collection. The St Petersburg Collection was launched in 1985. Since that time, Theo and his daughter Sarah have been creating limited edition egg objects and jewelry exclusively for the St Petersburg Collection.

All of Theo's masterworks are developed from his own original designs. None are copies of his grandfather's work. Theo Fabergé and Sarah Fabergé design exclusively for the
St Petersburg Collection and are in no way associated with any licensed product bearing the Fabergé name.

Theo Fabergé is the only living grandson of Carl Fabergé designing or manufacturing today.
Sarah Fabergé is Theo Fabergé's daughter.

The St Petersburg Collection is the generic name for creations and designs by Theo Fabergé and Sarah Fabergé Theo Fabergé and Sarah Fabergé design solely for the
St Petersburg Collection and are not in any way associated with licensed products currently sold or advertised with the Fabergé name.

Carl Fabergé had five sons. The youngest, Nicholas Fabergé arrived in London in 1906 to help run the only overseas branch of 'The House of Fabergé', in Dover Street, London. This office was to close in 1917, but Nicholas remained in London and in 1922 fathered a son, Theo.

From an early age Theo Fabergé had a passion for handcrafting objects to great precision. A fascination with the natural beauties of wood led him to explore the techniques of ornamental turning, the art of deep cut engraving and the sculpturing of woods, ivories, and metals using precision lathes. Having restored a valuable Holtzapffel lathe originating from 1861, he began to design and make elegant objects from rare woods and antique ivory, for pleasure and under commission.

In a relatively short time commissions began to arrive from renowned collectors of Carl Fabergé. Creations were catalogued in such institutions as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Hermitage in St Petersburg. At this point however, Theo was still producing all his own designs personally. In 1984, this was to change when he was persuaded to produce a collection of designs to be sold on the international market. These were not to be private commissions, but limited editions by Theo Fabergé, created by his own craftsmanship and, under his direction, the talents of specialists in precious metals, crystal, enamels, lapidary, precious gems and porcelain.

Sarah Fabergé, the only daughter of Theo Fabergé, was born on the south coast of England in 1958. She accompanied her father on his first visit to Russia - then the USSR - in the winter of 1974. Naturally they spent some time in St. Petersburg where her Great Grandfather both worked and lived. The visit made a lasting impression on Sarah.

Having completed her education she decided not to follow in her father's footsteps, but to ensue a career as a civil servant. Nevertheless, she has always been interested in the arts. In 1988 she married and towards the end of the following year her son Joshua was born. Like many young women after the birth of their first child, the event acted as a catalyst to take stock of her life and goals. Sarah decided that she would like to explore her own artistic creativity.

Sarah likes to design works that can be handled and in the case of her jewelry, worn. Her primary goal is to create something that can be enjoyed by the individuals who acquire her work. Sarah's work, while not replicating the work of her forebears, has one common theme, quality and originality of design. Sarah, like her father Theo, is continuing a tradition which the world thought was lost a generation ago.
